Neem Karoli Baba also known as Maharaj Ji, is a well-known Indian Saint whose devotee believes that he was the incarnation of Lord Hanuman Ji. There is some personal information about Neem Karoli Baba available from various sources, Maharaj Ji was born at 1900, Maharaj Ji was born in a prosperous Brahmin Family in Akbarpur in Firozabad District UP, His real name was Laxman Narayan Sharma.
Maharaj Ji got married at the age of 11, soon after marriage Maharaj Ji left the house to become Sadhu, later on the request of his father Maharaj Ji returned home, and had two sons and a daughter.
History of Ashram
Baba or Maharaj Ji wandered all over India on his journey, There is a famous train incident that tells the story of Neem Karoli Baba Ashram Nainital and how it came to existence.
One time Maharaj Ji was on the train and TT asked him if he had a ticket, Maharaj ji did not have a ticket so TT forced Maharaj Ji off the Train, After that they tried to start the train but the train was ready to move, so someone suggested TT that he should apologise to Maharaj Ji, and pray him to sit back in the train. Maharaj asked the railways to build a station at Neem Karoli Nainital, and then Maharaj Ji started laughing and jokingly said “What, is it up to me to start the train now?” then people built a station at that place.
After that Maharaj Ji continued his Journey, During his journey, people called him many names, apart from Laxman Das people called him Handi Wallah Baba, and Tikonia Walla Baba. He meditated at Vavania village of Morbi in Gujarat he was known as Tallaiya Baba. In Vrindavan locals called him Cahmatkari Baba. During his lifetime, two main ashrams were built, at Kainchi Dham and Vrindavan. In time, over 100 temples were constructed in his name.
Maharaj Ji as the Blanket vale Baba
There is a famous story about Maharaj Ji about why he is called Kambal vale Baba. There was a devotee couple of Maharaj Ji in Fatehgarh. One evening Maharaj ji reached their place and asked them to arrange his stay there. The couple was more than happy to serve Maharaj Ji, They arranged a cot for Maharaj Ji, in the night they heard the voice of Maharaj Ji as if Maharaj Ji was in a lot of pain or someone was beating him. Still, the couple was not sure if they should wake Maharaj Ji, in the morning Maharaj Ji folded the blanket and gave it to the couple and asked them to through it in the Ganga Ji without opening it, they did the same as they were heading to the Ganga Ji they felt that the blanket was getting heavier. Still, they did not open it and threw it in Ganga Ji.
One month later single son of the couple who was in the British army came back home and told the family that one night enemies surrounded him and he had no chance to escape, enemies were firing at him but he felt like a blanket was saving him from the bullets and no bullet could reach to him, old couple understood that it was the same night Maharaj ji came to their house. That is how people started calling him Kambal vale Baba.
